A double cylinder air compressor has two cylinders of equal size that work in parallel. Typically, the larger piston compresses the air and the smaller piston then delivers compressed air to the storage tank. Both cylinders are connected with a common inlet and outlet port.

The cylinder is usually made of cast iron to reduce friction. A piston rod is attached to the cylinder and has piston rings on either side. These rings are used to automatically compensate for wear. They also serve to seal the cylinder.

Cylinder liners are also commonly used in cylinders. They allow for greater clearance between the valve and piston. In addition, they reduce reconditioning costs.

Changing the piston diameter and lining can change the displacement of the cylinder. Displacement is typically expressed in cubic feet per minute. However, this is dependent on the type of configuration of the compressor.

Increasing the cylinder capacity is the best way to increase the overall power of the compressor. This is because the trapped gas adds force to the return stroke. Therefore, re-expansion of the trapped gas is the most important factor in determining the volumetric efficiency.

When a cylinder is not cooled adequately, its capacity is reduced. To minimize this, a water-cooled cylinder can be used. Additionally, internal baffles can be incorporated to improve the reliability of the valve.

A thermosiphon system is often used in small air compressors. During the compression cycle, the temperature of the discharge gas rises across the cylinder. If this is not accompanied by a sufficient amount of cooling, the cylinder may become contaminated. Alternatively, a static cooling system can be used.
